The urban walls
In the lower part, bricks 1½ and 2 feet in length were used. The bishop’s seat must have been within these walls. The first Paleochristian Cathedral, later enlarged in the Longobard period, as well as the current one, must have been set against the city’s late-ancient walls (one of the parchments reproduced on a pillar refer to a cathedral church iuxta civitatem Parnesem – “next to the city of Parma”).
