Brescian painter Lattanzio Gambara was commissioned to paint the frescoes of the Life of Christ on the walls of the nave, and completed the work between 1567 and 1573.

The Life of Christ: a great story in images
The main scene in each fresco is made up of the Gospel episode of the Life of Christ painted in the square above the matronea, paired and connected to the underlying pendatives, bearing Biblical quotations, and squares with monochrome depictions of scenes from the Old Testament, seen as prophetic predictions of events in the life of Christ. The frescoes are intended to be viewed in a clockwise direction, starting with the first scene on the left, near the entrance. After the organ, the series continues on the right hand side along to wall back to the counterfacade.
First scene: the Annunciation
The Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary, from the Gospel according to Luke. In the background at the centre of a classical-style building: The Visitation of Mary to St Elizabeth. In monochrome: Gideon and the Test of the Fleece, from the Book of Judges, where the water that falls on the cloak of the Judge symbolises the Holy Spirit upon Mary.

The counterfacade
The cycle concludes in the upper part of the counterfacade, with the Ascension of Christ from the Acts of the Apostles. There are three monochromes. The central one, over the main door, depicts the ascension of Elijah on the chariot of fire from the Second Book of the Kings. The monochrome on the left depicts the temptation of Adam and Eve, from the Book of Genesis. The monochrome on the right depicts the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the earthly paradise, from the Book of Genesis.
