The Chapel of the Crucifix
The chapel contains a wooden, Gothic-style polychrome crucifix from the 15th century. Christ’s head is inclined the right and his face bears a serene, solemn expression, in the repose of death. For realism, the body is stained with dripping blood. The arms were made with pins at the base of the shoulders so that they could be closed. This was part of the Good Friday ritual of carrying the crucifix in a procession before placing it on the tomb.
The Valeri Chapel
Polygonal in design, this chapel was built between 1423 and 1426. It is divided by ribs, each bearing the motto of the commissioning family: Je atand la dieu mersi (I await God’s mercy). Episodes from the lives of Saints Andrew, Catherine of Alexandria and Christopher, – the names of the commissioning members of the Valeri family.
